Defeating the optional bosses hidden within Path of Exile 2 is one of the best ways to optimize your character's build early on. One boss you definitely should not skip is Yama, the White. Located deep in the Halls of the Dead beneath the Eye of Hinekora, this encounter rewards players with two permanent bonus passive skill points upon completion. Accessing this arena becomes available during the Trial of the Ancestors side questline right after you free Matiki on the Isle of Kin. Before jumping into the fight, grabbing essential supplies like POE2 Currency through reliable platforms like u4n can help you gear up with enough defenses to handle his brutal physical and chaos damage.
Preparing Your Character Defenses
Yama relies almost entirely on physical burst damage and chaos damage over time. If your character lacks adequate defenses, even standard melee strikes can send you straight back to the checkpoint. Prioritizing chaos resistance on your ring slots and armor pieces is crucial before entering the Halls of the Dead. For energy shield-focused builds, taking Chaos Inoculation makes the chaos-infused portions of this fight significantly easier. Spending time trading or crafting proper gear ensures you will not get caught off guard by unexpected damage spikes.
Surviving the Soul Clone Mechanic
When Yama drops to roughly a third of his total health, he triggers his most lethal mechanic: stopping time and summoning several shadow copies around the arena. This phase acts as a DPS check and a rapid visual puzzle. One of the copies will display a distinct glowing circle beneath its feet. You must immediately movement-skill your way inside that circle before the timer expires. Staying outside the ring when the ability finishes results in an instant, unavoidable death. Keep your eyes sharp and move the moment the arena darkens.
Navigating the Pillar and Staff Phase
At specific health thresholds, Yama leaps onto his staff and becomes completely invulnerable to all incoming damage. Sitting atop a high pillar, he sends down a barrage of chaos projectiles with the help of extra clones. Trying to attack him during this phase is useless and exposes you to severe danger. Instead, immediately look for the stone structures surrounding the battleground. Stand behind these pillars to break line-of-sight and block incoming projectiles until he descends back to the ground.
Avoiding Glyph Blasts and Chaos Flamethrowers
Beyond his phase shifts, Yama features two distinct frontal abilities that require quick reaction times. He periodically plunges his staff down to draw a large purple glyph across the floor. This area detonates shortly after, dealing heavy burst damage and leaving behind a harmful chaos pool. Simply dash out of the drawn glyph before it explodes. When he channels his targeted chaos flamethrower attack, dodge-rolling directly behind him puts you in a completely safe position while allowing you to keep dealing damage.
Aggressive Positioning and Execution Tips
Staying close to Yama is actually much safer than keeping your distance. Hugging his back in close quarters frequently prevents him from cycling into his deadliest ranged attack patterns. Once you finish the fight and collect your passive skill points, investing in high-tier items or saving up a POE 2 Mirror of Kalandra from u4n can propel your endgame progression to new heights. Mastering this fight early ensures your character stays well ahead of the power curve as you push deeper into the campaign.
